On 12 June 2014 EAPA held its 8th EAPA Symposium in the building of the French National Association for Public Works “La Maison des Travaux Publics” 3, rue de Berri, 75008 Paris, France.

Under the heading “ Challenges and opportunities for the European asphalt paving industry in the 21th century” 115 participants from all over Europe attended the EAPA Symposium. There were even colleagues from South Africa, USA, Japan and Australia.

New elected EAPA President Ayberk Özcan opened the Symposium and welcomed the participants and the speakers of the day. The presentations started with the Session “From constructing new roads to preventive maintenance”. Here Yann Lefeuvre of Colas spoke about “Maintenance and reducing costs”. He was followed by Lotte Josephsen of Lemminkäinen A/S who showed us “Contracts that really work”. After the lunch “Paving durable roads” was addressed in a second session. Here Norbert Simmleit of TPA informed the audience about “Process Automated Asphalt Paving – Quality from asphalt plant to paver”. Egbert Beuving spoke on behalf of the EAPA Asphalt Plant- and Equipment Manufacturers’ Group of EAPA and he showed that there is a lot of information technology available, which we could use tomorrow. After a coffee break, in the session “Workforce challenges – Keeping health and quality assured”, Katrin Hunstock from EUROVIA showed that we have to take care of our workforce. We have to educate, motivate and train them so they can do an excellent job. Mike Acott of the National Asphalt Pavement Association of the USA (NAPA) addressed the health aspects for workers. Mike Acott also gave a second presentation about the Go-To-Market strategy of his association to promote the advantages of asphalt to different stakeholders and the public in the USA.

The sessions were moderated by the EAPA staff namely Mr. Egbert Beuving the Secretary General and Dr. Carsten Karcher the Director.

One of EAPA’s main goals of this Symposium was to exchange information. Therefore there was enough time for exchanging information and discussions during the sessions and also during the breaks.

EAPA is sure that it has provided an interesting programme for the attendees. The feedback EAPA got showed this and EAPA thinks that the participants have enjoyed the Symposium, gained new information as well as new input for their everyday work and that they had good discussions with the colleagues.

It was the first time in the EAPA Symposium history that EAPA members were able to present their companies and products in a small exhibition to the participants. Six companies used this opportunity.

The EAPA Symposium was sponsored by the EAPA Associate Members: VIALIT from Austria, BENNINGHOVEN from Germany, and MeadWestVaco, Europe.

More details about the full programme with speakers and presentations can be found on the EAPA website www.eapa.org from the beginning of September. The Symposium participants are already able to download this information in the Member’s Only area of this website.

EAPA’s General Council Assembly decided to have a yearly EAPA Symposium in a slightly extended version besides the years when the Eurasphalt & Eurobitume Congress will take place. So the next 9th EAPA Symposium will be held on the 4 June 2015 in Istanbul, Turkey. EAPA will keep you informed on the programme and the content, so please save this date!
