Keep Europe Moving | The RoadCast Final Episode

The road conversation Europe needs

The network Europe relies on every day cannot afford to wait

Europe’s ambitions for safer, greener and increasingly digital mobility depend on the quality of the physical road network supporting them.

In this special episode of EAPA’s video podcast The RoadCast, representatives of national road administrations, the broader road construction sector and millions of road users discuss maintenance, funding, climate resilience, digitalisation and what Europe’s road network needs for the future.

This last episode of the season 2 of The Roadcast will be released just ahead of the Connecting Europe Days at the end of September 2026.

The conversation brings together:

  • Carsten Karcher, Secretary General of EAPA and host of The RoadCast.
  • Jean-Pierre Paseri, President of FIEC, Vice-President of EAPA and ERF Board Member, speaking on behalf of road construction actors, including ERF, EAPA and IRF;
  • Steve Phillips, Director General of CEDR, representing the perspective of Europe’s national road administrations;
  • Diogo Pinto, Director General of FIA Region I, representing mobility clubs and millions of road users; and

Why this conversation matters

Europe already has an extensive road network spanning approximately 6.5 million kilometres. It supports everyday journeys, public transport, emergency services and freight, while providing the first and last mile of almost every multimodal journey.

The discussion examines how Europe can protect and modernise this network, prepare it for climate change and new technology, and provide the long-term financial certainty needed for authorities and industry to plan and invest.

It also explores what the future of the network means for road users—including safety, reliability, accessibility and affordability—and how roads should be funded as mobility patterns change and revenues from traditional fuel taxation decline.

Waiting also has a cost. Delayed maintenance can result in greater disruption and more expensive interventions, while uncertain investment makes it harder to retain skills, build capacity and introduce new solutions.

Keeping Europe moving starts with the roads we already have.
