European Road Maintenance Forum #ERMF2024: Promoting Sustainable Road Maintenance

The European Road Maintenance Forum (ERMF) gathered on April 4th, bringing together experts to discuss CO2 emissions reduction and sustainable road maintenance. Hosted by EAPA, the workshop achieved notable success, fostering collaboration and innovative solutions in the industry.

With 90% of Europe’s roads made of asphalt, maintaining them properly can cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 5%, saving 14 million tonnes of CO2 each year—the same as taking 3 million cars off the road. Well-maintained roads also help electric vehicles, reduce traffic noise, improve travel times, and lower car maintenance costs. Asphalt’s recyclability supports the circular economy, but budget and technology challenges remain.

ERMF serves as a platform to tackle these issues and align with Europe’s goals to cut CO2 emissions by 55% by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

The event also celebrated International Road Maintenance Day. Held in person at EAPA’s Brussels office and online, the event was free to attend, with physical seats filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

We thank everyone for participating and look forward to continued efforts in advancing sustainable road maintenance.
