Symposium 2015 – Istanbul
EAPA held the 9thย EAPA Symposium on 3 June 2015 in Istanbul, Turkey. Over 100 participants attended from the European asphalt and bitumen industry, administration and academia.
Under the theme โNews and solutions from the European asphalt paving industryโ, the symposium informed its delegates about the latest news from the asphalt sector and provided an excellent opportunity for networking, exchange and discussions.

8th EAPA Symposium 2014
The programme for the day included an opening session with a keynote speaker. In the early morning after the welcome by the President of the European Asphalt Pavement Association, Ayberk รzcan, Ismail Ertug, Member of the European Parliament, Vice-president of the Transport and Tourism TRAN Committee and speaker on behalf of the Social Democrats of the European Parliament, gave a keynote about โTransport in European Unionโ. This speech was followed by two presentations, โSocial media to inform the uninformed about asphalt pavementsโ by Juan-Josรฉ Potti and, ASEFMA – Spanish Association of Asphalt Producers, Spain and โAddressing asphalt advantages โ The Eurasphalt communication planโ by Carsten Karcher, EAPA, Belgium.
The morning programme continued with a session on warm mix asphalt:
“Why WMA โ Warm Mix Asphalt a key solution of our industryโ by Egbert Beuving and Jean Paul Michaut, EAPA, Brussels,
โGlobal successful applications of WMAโ by Bjarne Bo Jansen, NCC, Denmark,
โHow to stimulate the use of WMAโ by Eivind Olaf Andersen, Veidekke, Norway.
In the afternoon, two more sessions were completed with a session focused on โNews from Brussels and the EAPA Committeesโ:
โEuropean research activities in the field of asphalt pavementsโ by Rudi Bull-Wasser, BASt – Federal Highway Research Institute, Germany
โEnvironmental Product Declarations โ EPDs: now and tomorrowโ by Malcolm Simms, Mineral Products Association, UK
โBituminous binders for paving โ how to characterise and specify bitumenโ by Bernard Eckmann, Eurovia, France.
In the last session of the day, a very interesting overview of โTrends and news in the European asphalt industryโ was presented:
โRoad Maintenance and Road Asset Managementโ by Luut van Hoogevest, Grontmij Nederland B.V., Netherlands
โAsphalt recycling from 0 to 100% – Recycling practice in European Asphalt Paving Industryโ by Andrรฉ Tรคube, DAV – German Asphalt Pavement Association, Germany
โPaving with emulsions – Cold Mixes, micro surfacing and surface dressingsโ by Jean-Paul Michaut, Colas, France.
The last speaker of the day, Andrรฉ Molenaar, Emeritus Professor of TU Delft, made a very entertaining address with the title โA life of asphaltโ.
EAPA director Dr. Carsten Karcher moderated the sessions.
One of EAPAโs main goals of this Symposium was to exchange information. Therefore, enough time was provided for exchanging information and discussions during the sessions and during the breaks.
EAPA is sure that it has provided an interesting programme for the attendees. The feedback EAPA received showed this and EAPA thinks that the participants have enjoyed the Symposium, gained new information as well as new input for their everyday work and that they had good discussions with the colleagues.
During the Symposium EAPA members were able to present their companies and products in a small exhibition to the participants. Eight companies used this opportunity.
EAPA Associate Members MeadWestVaco, Europe sponsored this yearโs EAPA Symposium.
For attendees that were interested a tour was organised the following day to the construction site of the 3rdย Bosporus Bridge.
On the evening before the Symposium EAPA organised a dinner for the participants and their spouses in a nice restaurant at the Bosporus, which was very much appreciated.
