Classification of readiness of European highways for adopting connected, automated and electric vehicles

Automated and electric vehicles are seen nowadays as the greatest tools of humanity to meet European objectives of Zero Deaths on European roads and Carbon Neutrality by 2050. But is the European Road Network prepared to support the traffic of this type of vehicles? The European Asphalt Pavement Association (EAPA) proposed a new classification of roads based on key parameters, which can give, in a simple way, information to the driver and/or vehicle about the level of support for automated and electrified driving.

At the same time, Road Authorities can refer to the classification to determine the necessary upgrades to be implemented during the decision-making, in order to make possible the circulation of these vehicles under a desired level of automation and electrification
