History

The idea of creating a European Asphalt Association was first raised in 1972, at a conference in London. Only one year after the initial idea, a meeting took place in Germany where representatives from several national asphalt associations met to initiate concrete actions to lay the basis of forming a European wide association.

On 14 October 1973, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the UK reached a decision which formally founded the European Asphalt Pavement Association (EAPA). This decision was witnessed by representatives from Switzerland, NAPA and South Africa, who due to their non-EU status could not become official member of EAPA.

From 1973 to 1990, being the Secretary General of EAPA was an honorary post. In 1990, the Dutch member association VBW Asphalt offered to host a permanent EAPA office in their building in Breukelen. Together with a new office, also the first fulltime Secretary General, Max van Devivere and some additional staff took office.

In 2001, the EAPA team changed and a new Secretary General started to work for EAPA. In addition, for the first time EAPA got a technical director (the current EAPA Secretary General Egbert Beuving). After three years, the decision was reached, that an effective European Association needs to be situated close to the EU institutions and thus, in 2005 EAPA moved to Brussels. This decision proved to be a good one as the relationship to other associations and institutions improved and intensified over time.

After some internal changes in the EAPA team, in 2009 Egbert Beuving became Director of EAPA and Simon van der Byl took over the role as a part time Secretary General.

In June 2013 Simon van der Byl retired as EAPA Secretary General and Egbert Beuving became the new EAPA Secretary General. At the same time dr. Carsten Karcher joined EAPA as EAPA Director.
